He has but to send his pictures to the Exhibition at Somerset-House, in order to have them hung up: he has but to dine once a year with the Academy, the Nobility, the Cabinet-Minister, and the Members of the Royal Family, in order not to want a dinner all the rest of the year. But as the English language matured it lost something that Florio and all his inferior colleagues had, and that they had in common with the language of Montaigne. This is a remark, I think, worthy of the ingenious and amiable author from whom Paley borrowed it. The introduction of a serious element into the mood of amusement, which is at the basis of humour, makes a breach in the dividing wall. In all things there is a division of labour. The preceding essays have traced the development of sacramental purgation and of the ordeal as resources devised by human ingenuity and credulity when called upon to decide questions too intricate for the impatient intellect of a rude and semi-barbarous age. {364} For the comedy of character, in its highest and purest form, we are told, and rightly told, to go to Moliere. Their splendour, he seems to think, reflects a splendour upon those who are much about them. Children are particularly sensible of this constraint from their thoughtlessness and liveliness. In places where the force of the sea is less violent, or its tides less rapid, the shores are generally seen to descend with a more gradual declivity. 99, 95, 96, 70, 72 and 73. After a repast they get up, one after the other, each exhibiting his musical resources by beating a drum and singing, and adding a touch of the actor’s art by making comical gestures, and playing ridiculous tricks with the face, head and limbs.[216] Much the same kind of contest takes place {250} in connection with their peculiar ordeals, already referred to. Thus Savage Landor remarks that genuine humour, as well as true wit, requires a sound and capacious mind, which is always a grave one;[271] and Tennyson notes that humour “is generally most fruitful in the highest and most solemn human spirits”.[272] The need of this deep and massive seriousness, if not of a marked tendency to sombre reflection, seems to be borne out by what we know of the great humorists. The eagerness of composition strikes out sparkles of fancy, and runs the thoughts more naturally and closely into one another. You deceive yourself as to your own motives, and weave a wrong theory out of them for human nature. About none of Dante’s characters is there that ambiguity which affects Milton’s Lucifer. May not the new sounds, the guttural utterances and the rest, affect a child in a like manner as a kind of disorderly play? In the case of Ruth the two expressions remained for a time interchangeable, and frequently {194} alternated in the same fit of joyous delight. If you want to know what any of the authors were who lived before our time, and are still objects of anxious inquiry, you have only to look into their works. The natural tendency of their just indignation against so vile a criminal is indeed the most fatal and {67} ruinous to him. If our friend has been injured, we readily sympathize with his resentment, and grow angry with the very person with whom he is angry. There is a tune in it, a mechanical recurrence of the same rise and fall in the clauses of his sentences, independent of any reference to the meaning of the text, or progress or inflection of the sense. We may say, if we like, that the expression has been “transferred” to a new situation or a new experience, through the working of a force which has been called “the analogy of feeling”.[124] This process of extension by analogy of situation and attitude may be seen to be a constituent in the development of laughter. When our great verse is all remote and the familiar things are left to folk-lore and rag-time, then folk-lore and rag-time will monopolize public attention and fill the heart of the people. Pliny mentions a race of enchanters on the Euxine who were lighter than water—“eosdem pr?terea non posse mergi ne veste quidam degravatos;”[1028] and Stephanus Byzantinus describes the inhabitants of Thebe as magicians who could kill with their breath, and floated when thrown into the sea.[1029] To the concurrence of these notions we may attribute the fact that when the cold-water ordeal was abandoned, in the thirteenth century, as a judicial practice in ordinary cases, it still maintained its place as a special mode of trying those unfortunate persons whom their own folly, or the malice and fears of their neighbors, pointed out as witches and sorcerers.[1030] No less than a hundred years after the efforts of Innocent III. Though man, therefore, be naturally endowed with a desire of the welfare and preservation of society, yet the Author of nature has not entrusted it to his reason to find out that a certain application of punishments is the proper means of attaining this end; but has endowed him with an immediate and instinctive approbation of that very application which is most proper to attain it. This expression is employed for all the varieties of the sentiment, between men, between the sexes, and for that which is regarded as divine.[391] For “a friend,” they have no other term than one which means a visitor or guest; and from this their expression for “friendship” is derived, which really means “hospitality.”[392] Verbal combinations in Guarani are visually simple, and I do not think we can be far wrong in looking upon _aihu_ as a union of the two primary words _ai_ and _hu_. There is however no contradiction in supposing two individuals to possess the same absolute properties: but then these original properties must be differently modified afterwards from the necessary difference of their situations, or we must suppose them both to occupy the same relative situation in two distinct systems corresponding exactly with each other. Maur. In the words of Professor Ward: “This law of habit we may reasonably regard as exemplified in the life of every individual in the long line of genealogical ascent that connects us with our humblest ancestors, in so far as every permanent advance in the scale of life implies a basis of habit embodied in a structure which has been perfected by practice.”[64] Laborious observations have been recorded of minute unicellular creatures to show that they “succeed as we do, only by way of trial and error.” Thus we are led to the conclusion that the acquisition of habits by the individual during his efforts to adapt himself to his environment, and transmitted down a long line of genealogical descent, is the method of heredity; and further, that man, in common with other animals, inherits all these racial and individual acquirements from his parents. I can but touch in the lightest manner on the data offered by the vast realm of industrial activity. In certain cases it is even a familiar object of satire. Necessity has been therefore justly called ‘the tyrant’s plea.’ It is no better with the mere doctrine of utility, which is the sophist’s plea. One individual must never prefer himself so much even to any other individual, as to hurt or injure that other, in order to benefit himself, though the benefit to the one should be much greater than the hurt or {121} injury to the other. Permanent carbon photo-prints on paper can be made and doubtless the process can be applied to transparent films if desired. A laugh would presumably be less easy to affect in such circumstances than a smile; and, in any case, it would be far less liable to be overlooked. Yet be its life that of a year or a century, a book may play its little part in the mental development of those who read it. They all of them express very abstract and metaphysical relations, which any man, who takes the trouble to try it, will find it extremely difficult to express by nouns substantive, in the same manner as we may express the relation denoted by the preposition _above_, by the noun substantive _superiority_. When stopped, the shaft must lie within the hoop, or the shot did not count. IRREGULAR ORDEALS. Robinson reminds us that a tickled child will roll over on his back just like a puppy. It is otherwise when we come to consider the first instances of laughing amusement at the presentation of “funny” objects. The mistake of this discredited doctrine of psychological hedonism lay in confusing the motive or impulse to action with the valuation of conduct. The present production of books gives us an instructive example of the existence of duplications and omissions on a large scale; and the elucidation of these will bring us a little nearer to the application of our principles to the library, toward which we are tending. Hill describes his mode of tickling in one case as running the fingers up the child’s arm _like a mouse_. First, let us ask a question or two. They may be profitably used, of course in connection with reading, and yet the pleasure of following a piano player or a phonograph with the printed score seems to be known to few. We have seen a tendency to claim too much in the way of serious function for the laughter of comedy. Though the artificial habits and constitutions of men must modify these influences, we still, notwithstanding, often perceive the effects are simultaneous in time, and sometimes that they preserve the same type, and as such artificial modifications do not exist in the same degree in the animal creation, especially in those undomesticated, on the contrary, these influences are so uniform on them, that the signs and symptoms of their presence are the barometers of rural life, it follows that these very modifications in men, when rightly perceived, are additional proofs of their being the effects of one cause. Whatever interests, is interesting. According to the former, the first smile appeared, in the case of two of his children, at the age of forty-five days, and, of a third, at a somewhat earlier date.[97] Not only were the corners of the mouth drawn back, but the eyes brightened and the eyelids slightly closed. I answer, that in the sentiment of approbation there are two things to be taken notice of; first, the sympathetic passion of the spectator; and secondly, the emotion which arises from his observing the perfect coincidence between this sympathetic passion in himself, and the original passion in the person principally concerned. In cases where it is not desirable to encourage circulation in a given class, such an indication should evidently meet with no response. This fact in itself suggests that we are not likely to find an exceptional exuberance of the mirthful spirit. But when they are asked why we should not act in such or such a manner, the very question seems to suppose that, to those who ask it, this manner of acting does not appear to be for its own sake the natural and proper object of those sentiments. The words _green_ and _blue_ would, in all probability, be sooner invented than the words _greenness_ and _blueness_; the words _above_ and _below_, than the words _superiority_ and _inferiority_. A frequent termination of the action in this comedy is a climax, in which the folly of the comic character rises to an outburst so voluminous and torrent-like as to throw the onlookers in his world winery business plan pa into uproarious mirth. _Besides_, this faculty has knowledge of _all internal faculties, and acts upon them_. Many people think there is a want of honesty or a want of understanding in this. I am not sure whether Mandeville has not given the same answer to this hackneyed question. {454} Visible objects, Colour, and all its different modifications, are in themselves mere shadows or pictures, which seem to float, as it were, before the organ of Sight. It is the same case here. They have got a set of fine notions and new acquaintance. But though all these Sensations are equally incapable of division; there are three of them, Taste, Smell, and Sound; which seem capable of a certain composition and decomposition. The knowledge of this, with the consideration of the tenderness of Reputation in our Sex, (which as our delicatest Fruits and finest Flowers are most obnoxious to the injuries of Weather, is submitted to every infectious Blast of malicious Breath) made me very cautious, how I expos’d mine to such poisonous Vapours. But Frederic Moreau is not made in that way. Yet the rapid, accurate and efficient performance of the lesser task is as important as that of the greater. Learning was then an ascetic, but recluse and profound. The original form of a philosophy cannot be poetic. 3. But those conditions will be adjusted quite differently if we regard the comfort of the worker as the prime object from what they will be if we regard the excellence of the output as the prime object and the worker’s comfort as a means to that end.

II.–_Of those Passions which take their Origin from a particular Turn or Habit of the Imagination._ EVEN of the passions derived from the imagination, those which take their origin from a peculiar turn or habit it has acquired, though they may be acknowledged to be perfectly natural, are, however, but little sympathized with. The Jesuit Campion was subjected to the rack no less than three times with extreme severity, and in the intervals was made to dispute with Protestant divines.[1830] Having once thus secured its introduction in state trials for treason, the custom inevitably tended to spread to the sphere of the most ordinary criminal business. The generality of men, however, can only think in symbols, and can only be influenced by them; lies and illusions are propagated and perpetrated in the form of images, yet images perform necessary service in establishing goals of endeavour for securing co-ordination and moral direction. These various kinds and degrees of disagreement constitute the reason why these two particular sins of duplication and omission continue to be committed. It is hardly needful to point out that men’s judgments of the laughable element in breach of rule will be relative. To do any one thing best, there should be an exclusiveness, a concentration, a bigotry, a blindness of attachment to that one object; so that the widest range of knowledge and most diffusive subtlety of intellect will not uniformly produce the most beneficial results;—and the performance is very frequently in the inverse ratio, not only of the pretensions, as we might superficially conclude, but of the real capacity. He prized them as in certain respects the most valuable of all to the philosophic student of human speech. This humorous self-quizzing may be started by the spectacle of comedy, as Lessing and others suggest; yet this, as we shall see later, is not to be counted on. That is, here is an end aimed at, the desire and regular pursuit of a known good, and all this produced by motives evidently mechanical, and which never impel the mind but in a selfish direction. You do not bestow a cold, leisurely approbation on them, but look to see what they may be thinking of you, not without some apprehension for the result. good ten-penny nail! Giovanni Gualberto, offered himself to undergo the trial. An assistant in other lines? Moore had taken no active steps to prevent it! This way of speaking, which the grammarians call an Antonomasia, and which is still extremely common, though now not at all necessary, demonstrates how mankind are disposed to give to one object the name of any other, which nearly resembles it, and thus to denominate a multitude, by what originally was intended to express an individual. This latter position, which is maintained by Theistic “Rationalists,” leads to precisely the same “conclusion” as the arguments of the “Intuitionalists,” the only difference between them being that the conscience of the “Rationalists” is a thinking and intellectual organ, while the conscience of the Intuitionalists is an emotional and instinctive organ. 99, 95, 96, 70, 72 and 73. The Planets, therefore, all floating, in that immense tide of ether which is continually setting in from west to east round the body of the Sun, complete their revolutions in a longer or a shorter time, according to their nearness or distance from him. It should be borne in mind, however, that the difference between the three types of librarian is not so much difference in the amount of work done as it is in attitude of mind. _Blackwood_ in his definition of the word _Cockney_. Amidst the turbulence and disorder of faction, a certain spirit of system is apt to mix itself with that public spirit which is founded upon the love of humanity, upon a real fellow-feeling with the inconveniencies and distresses to which some of our fellow-citizens may be exposed. Here then his memory and senses present him with nothing more than certain external objects in themselves indifferent, and the recollection of extreme pain formerly connected with the same or similar objects. He will wonder, too, what unimagined things there may be and he will long to find out. Every thing is one in nature, and governed by an absolute impulse. For, lo! All these are objects which we cannot expect should interest our companions in the same degree in which they interest us. Of the millions of mummies which were zealously prepared in those ages, none was complete unless it had folded with it one or a number of chapters of this holy book, the formulas in which were safeguards and passwords to the spirit on its perilous journey. Moreover, the Japanese have, and retain, intellectual ideals and achievements of their own, having learned from the West hardly more than its mechanics and engineering. One fears that this was felt to be present, for example, by the women victimised by the men’s coarse teasing. I had long ago formed and been hardy enough to express a conviction that Sir Walter’s _forte_ is a sort of _traditional literature_ (whatever he accumulates or scatters through his pages, he leaves as he finds it, with very few marks of the master-mind upon it)—and as to the second person mentioned, he has just those powers of combination which belong to a man who leads a bull-dog in a string, and lets the animal loose upon his prey at the proper moment. In these two last expressions, the simple event, or matter of fact, is artificially split and divided in the one, into two; in the other, into three parts. “Let us suppose that a musical critic, after hearing a new symphony by an unconventional composer, immediately writes a lengthy appreciation of the performance. 77 On the use of exercise, and a retired situation for the 78 purpose An account of a system of cure, by being made to work, 81 related by Dr. Now no matter how many books may be in branches or in deposit stations, it is obviously impossible for the whole central stock to be at any one of them, still less to be at all of them at the same time. We feel, ourselves, some degree of those passions, and therefore sympathize with them: but as we do not grow hungry by reading the description, we cannot properly, even in this case, be said to sympathize with their hunger. Hence the origin of Verse or Poetry. History is full of examples of men and women who believed themselves attended by guardian angels or familiar spirits who prompted their actions and gave them advice; Socrates was constantly attended by his _daimones_, and Joan of Arc used to hear “spirit voices.” These and similar cases were evidence of the predominance of the subjective over the objective mind. I kept it in my waistcoat pocket all day, and at night I used to take it to bed with me and put it under my pillow. If, therefore, this last could take so very little from the happiness of a well-disposed mind, the other could add scarce any thing to it. It was the temperature of heat and cold which seemed to occasion the growth and dissolution of plants and animals; as appeared evident from the effects of the change of the seasons upon both. He, it, _b_—. Then there are the text books. It is the first lovely dawn of creation, when nature played her virgin fancies wild; when all was sweetness and freshness, and the heavens dropped fatness. A branch rarely houses anything that can not easily be replaced and it may be waste of money to make it fire-proof. “Everything flows,” said the Greek philosopher. (specify) If you do not consider the assistant so fitted, give particular reasons. It is thus that Cicero, in the first book of his Offices, endeavours to direct us to the practice of the four cardinal virtues, and that Aristotle in the practical parts of his Ethics, points out to us the different habits by which he would have us regulate our behaviour, such as liberality, magnificence, magnanimity, and even jocularity and good humour, qualities which that indulgent philosopher has thought worthy of a place in the catalogue of the virtues, though the lightness of that approbation which we naturally bestow upon them, should not seem to entitle them to so venerable a name. And once she said, with tearful eye, With quivering lip, yet tender tone, As if her weak and trembling heart Were half afraid its fears to own— “Herbert forgive, I know thou wilt, Or else my heart the wish would rue, Ah! a wrong word, or even look, may unhinge, and bring on a relapse! Yet there were exceptions, as among the Rhodians, whose laws authorized the torture of free citizens; and in other states it was occasionally resorted to, in the case of flagrant political offences; while the people, acting in their supreme and irresponsible authority, could at any time decree its application to any one irrespective of privilege. This may be asserted, even though it must not be forgotten that in these _Contes_ the holy man by no means infrequently emerges from his dangerous experiment unscathed: a fact which suggests that in the popular sentiment there lurked, not merely something of the child’s mirthful wal mart case study wonder at daring cunning, but a certain sympathetic tolerance for a caste, on the shoulders of which was laid a somewhat weighty yoke. Individual suggestibility, he considers, is conditioned by native disposition and character, and dependent upon the relative strengths of the two instincts of self-assertion and subjection. Gall observed, that ‘persons of a firm and constant character have the top of the brain much developed;’ and this is called the _organ of determinativeness_. A non-professional body, however, cannot, even with professional expert advice, satisfactorily regulate the employment of professionals for professional work. It may be observed, however, that, though in Sculpture the imitation of flowers and foliage pleases as an ornament of architecture, as a part of the dress which is to set off the beauty of a different and a more {411} important object, it would not please alone, or as a separate and unconnected object, in the same manner as a fruit and flower painting pleases. But Jonson has too exclusively been considered as the typical representative of a point of view toward comedy. The presence of strangers, so far removed from the plane of life of savages as the missionaries or officials of a civilised nation, would, one supposes, act as such a check to their risible impulses. He writes: “These houses were in length from east to west four hundred and eleven and a half [native] measures, which reduced to our [Spanish] measures make twelve hundred and thirty-four and a half yards (_varas_), and in breadth, from north to south three hundred and twenty-six measures, which are nine hundred and seventy-eight yards.” This passage has been analyzed by the learned antiquary, Senor Orozco y Berra.[407] The native measure referred to by Ixtlilxochitl was that of Tezcuco, which was identical with that of Mexico. The objector might find colour for his statement in the fact that it is Frenchmen, that is to say, members of the most sociable of modern races, who have chiefly dwelt on the delights of retirement from the crowd. Thus there are solar tides and lunar tides—when the forces of these two great luminaries concur, which they always do when they are either in the same or in the opposite parts of the heavens, they jointly produce a much greater tide, than when they are so situated in the heavens as each to make peculiar tides of their own; in the former, the attraction of the sun conspires with the attraction of the moon, by which means the high spring tides are formed; in the latter, the action of the sun is opposed to that of the moon, consequently the effect must be to depress the waters where the moon’s action has a tendency to raise them, and hence the production of the lower neap tides. It is granted that a certain thing, in itself highly useful, does not afford as much pleasure to the imagination, or excite as much interest as it ought to do, or as some other thing which is of less real and practical value. Here, again, I think, a better scientific theory bears out the result of one’s individual self-examination. It was after his trial at Portsmouth that he gave me this picture. Of these external and resisting substances, some yield easily, and change their figure, at least in some degree, in consequence of the pressure of our hand: others neither yield nor change their figure, in any respect, in consequence of the utmost pressure which our hand alone is capable of giving them. He would, I imagine, first of all, express very strongly his sorrow for the misfortune of that unhappy people, he would make many melancholy reflections upon the precariousness of human life, and the vanity of all the labours of man, which could thus be annihilated in a moment. I am ordered to dwell in the little and rocky island of Gyar?. Those who have the perfect ear for music are probably but a tiny portion of the human family; yet nobody has suggested {3} that this is an argument against the writing of books on musical form, the science of thorough bass and the rest. According to this writer, the process which determines our laughter is describable as an intellectual effort and its frustration. The following thesis, however, which will be elaborated in the course of this discussion, is based on a synchronous realization of rational principles and psychological processes. Whatever goes beyond this degree, how far soever it may be removed from absolute perfection, seems to deserve applause; and whatever falls short of it, to deserve blame.
