In less than six months, he was covered with ulcers, and a mass of disease. He found further, in carrying out psychological experiments, that whereas the introduction of a stronger stimulus than was expected is apt to excite apprehension in {65} the subject, that of a weaker stimulus will excite laughter.[44] Here, too, we seem to have a sensational reflex in which is present a distinctly mental element, _viz._, a moment of mild shock and apprehension at the sudden coming of something disagreeable and partially unknown, instantly followed by another moment of dissolution of shock in a pleasurable recognition of the harmlessness of the assault. The undigested “idea” or philosophy, the idea-emotion, is to be found also in poetic dramas which are conscientious attempts to adapt a true structure, Athenian or Elizabethan, to contemporary feeling. Born with a large proportion of the family failing, his vanity had been fed by flattery and example, so much so, that it might be said he was bred in simple formulating hypothesis vanity’s hot-house; and ultimately, from over excitation, and too little collision with the world, he fancied himself a second Crichton. To have held the centre of the stage for two hours in a role which requires both extreme violence and restraint, a role which requires simple force and subtle variation; to have sustained so difficult a role almost without support; this was a legitimate success. As the chroniclers lean to the side of the Neapolitan Princes or of the Count of Toulouse, so do their accounts of the event differ; the former asserting that Peter sustained mortal injury in the fire; the latter assuring us that he emerged safely, with but one or two slight burns, and that the crowd enthusiastically pressing around him in triumph, he was thrown down, trampled on, and injured so severely that he died in a few days, asseverating with his latest breath the truth of his revelations. It is a sensation which neither does nor can exist any where but either in the organ which feels it, or in the unknown principle of perception, whatever that may be, which feels in that clinical thinking organ, or by means of that organ. These extensions on the one hand and limitations on the other are clearly meant to safeguard the Hobbesian principle against the attacks to which it so dangerously exposes itself.[66] Even in this new and more guarded form, however, the theory will not bear the strain put upon it. 192.—It is needless to add any thing on this passage. Nor is this irregularity of sentiment felt only by those who are immediately affected by the consequence of any action.
